WELCOME TO THE SHRINERS HIGHLANDERS BAGPIPE BAND of Tampa Florida
The Highlanders are much more than a Scottish Bagpipe Unit. We are a proud band of Masonic Brothers, who share a love of bagpipes and Celtic music. We include our wives, children and significant others in many of our events. We are hard working, hard playing and devoted to becoming one of the best Shriner pipe bands in the Nation.
We love our God, our Country, our Flag and our Heritage. Though our Unit is Scottish, make no mistake;
“We are proud to be Americans”.
The Highlanders Unit of Egypt Shriners was chartered July 14, 1999 with only three members. A large undertaking for so few men. As word spread that Egypt had a Bagpipe Band and you did not have to know how to play pipes or drums to join, the band grew. There is not now, nor has there ever been a fee charged to learn how to play the pipes or drums. In fact you don’t have to play any instrument to be a Highlander. We have many positions that do not require the playing of an instrument. If you would like to learn, however, the members of the unit are always as willing to teach, as you are willing to learn. No matter what you decide to do, the first time you march in a parade and see the spectators stand and cheer; you will be hooked. The lassies are always intrigued by the kilts as well. While steeped in Scottish tradition and some of our members are indeed Scottish, it is in no way a prerequisite to membership.
You will also enjoy our weekly practice sessions. Not just for the lessons, but for the wonderful fellowship we share. It is an enjoyable escape from the pressure of the weekly grind. So come on over, we will make you feel right at home.
LOCATION: The Highlanders Unit Room is located inside the Egypt Shrine Unit Building. As you pass through the second set of double glass doors at the front of the building, we are located off the hallway which is the first door on your left. Look for the Pipes on the door. The Unit room can be accessed through the first door on the South side of the building as well.
PRACTICE TIMES: We hold practice on every Thursday starting at 7:30 PM in the unit room. Practice usually lasts about one and a half hours with social time before and after the practice. Our business meeting is conducted on the second Tuesday of each month and starts at 7:30 PM as well.
